Jilted lover forces girlfriend to drink acid

A 23-year-old man, Christian Samuel, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Prison by an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Ijeoma Nwachukwu. The police said Samuel forced Nwachukwu, 26, to drink acid while they were together at Cossy-Inn Hotel, Abule-Oshun, Lagos State. Our correspondent learnt that the defendant had been dating the deceased for some time.
However, Nwachukwu reportedly got engaged to another person without the knowledge of her 23-year-old boyfriend. When Samuel later learnt of it, he was said to have pretended as if nothing happened and invited the deceased to the hotel on January 11, 2014. He allegedly forced her to drink the acid, leading to her death. It was learnt that Samuel abandoned Nwachukwu’s corpse in the hotel and fled.
The owner of the hotel, Olusegun Sangojumo, was said to have discovered the corpse, but did not report to the police. Instead, the 64-year-old called his manager, Kehinde Ajibola, and one of the workers, Azeez Olaitan, to dispose of the corpse at the Mile 2 end of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The police were said to have discovered the corpse and in the course of investigation, rounded up all the suspects. While Samuel was arraigned for murder, the other three suspects were arraigned for accessory after the fact.
The police prosecutor, Inspector G.O Osuyi, of the Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, said the offences were punishable under sections 221, 409 and 229 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. Osuyi, in a remand application for the four defendants, said they made confessional statements to the police and were identified by witnesses. The matter was adjourned till April 2, 2014 pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Man, 30, in court for raping 52-year-old

A 30-year-old man, Seun Balogun, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly raping a 52-year-old woman, Bola. The police said the incident happened at the Alagbado area of Lagos State. It was learnt that the victim was a “spiritual woman leader” in an orthodox church.
On the day of the incident, a church member was said to have fallen into a trance and Bola was on her way to call the pastor when she was attacked around 11pm by Balogun. The defendant allegedly held her by the throat and threatened to strangle her if she did not cooperate with him. He was said to have forcefully had carnal knowledge of her that night.
Balogun was later arrested after the victim reported the matter at the police station. He was arraigned on a count of rape which reads, “That you, Seun Balogun, on February 11, 2014, about 11pm at the Aminkanle area of Alagbado, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did forcefully have sexual intercourse with one Bola, aged 52 years without her consent and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 258 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty and elected summary trial. The magistrate, Ms S.O Solebo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

17-yr-old nabbed for sleeping with mother and raping 4 children

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Ebonyi State, yesterday, arrested a serial rapist and homosexual, Chibuike Maduka, who allegedly raped four children of different parents at Ndibe in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state. The suspect who blamed his strange sexual escapades on his mother, Mrs. Idam Augustina Josephine, confessed to have had sexual intercourse with his mother on several occasions and that he doesn’t know what usually compel him to have sex with children in the area.
Parading the suspect at the Command headquarters in Abakaliki, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mrs. Ego Echendu, said the suspect was arrested after a tip-off by an indigene of the area, adding that the suspect had in a confessional statement disclosed that he had sexual intercourse with his mother.  “We continued to monitor the suspect and fortunately at about 3:00pm yesterday, our divisional office at Afikpo North Local Government Area was able to locate him and his mother who, we reliably gathered, was also a  key player in the son’s sexual escapades.
The suspect confessed to have been having sexual intercourse with the biological mother since last year and also claimed that the mother usually encouraged him to sleep with children of tender ages. “He sleeps with his own biological mother who is in our custody now; and he also told us that he is homosexual.
Vanguard gathered that the suspect, who hailed from Amangu village in Nkpohoro, began raping young children in 2008 as a Senior Secondary School, SSS, 1 student of Oziza Secondary School, Afikpo North Local Government area of the state.
My mother used me for rituals —Suspect
According to the suspect, “I’m here because of my mother. She used me for ritual. I don’t know what I’m doing. If I see a little child I will rape her; this act started in 2008; it is not my fault but that of my mother. “I have raped my mother and four children. My father is late. I have had homosexual activities with one Emmanuel three times at Amangu in Afikpo North Local Government Area.” His mum denies the allegations. Reacting, the mother of the suspect, Mrs. Idam Augustina Josephine, 45, denied having any sexual involvement with her son. She said: “I am 45 years and the mother of Chibuike Maduka. How can I teach my child to rape little children? I’m here because my son raped some children; he is telling a lie, he never had any sexual relationship with me.”

Man who slept with daughters for two years gets 14 years imprisonment

                                           Man who slept

A 35-year-old bus driver, Adeleke Adetayo, who was charged with sleeping with his nine-year-old and 13-year-old daughters, has been sentenced by the Family Court unit of an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court to 14 years imprisonment. Saturday PUNCH had in July 2013, reported how Adetayo’s two daughters were rescued after a sexual abuse that lasted two years. Another report was published in December 2013, detailing the children’s life at the Lagos State Children’s Home, where they lamented that they had been scarred for life as a result of the abuse they suffered from their father.
The six-month trial of Adetayo culminated in him finally pleading guilty to sexual assault of his children. In her judgement, Chief Magistrate A. Oshoniyi found Adetayo guilty of sexual abuse and child defilement, sentencing him to seven years each for the crime against each child. The judgment has been hailed by activists and government officials involved in the case, who stated that it was a victory for the Child Rights Act, 2005, which has hitherto been flouted by many criminals.
The Child Rights Act prescribes a sentence of 14 years for a person found guilty of having sexual intercourse with a child. Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, who rescued the children and handed them over to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviationn, hailed the judgment as a message to pedophiles in the state that the law would catch up with them. She said, “I cannot be happier about how this case turned out. It is not only about the fact that the law has prevailed but that it is now clear that child defilement cases can be effectively prosecuted. There was no way of reaching the mother of the abused children, Kemi for comment.  The woman who has since remarried in Oyo Stat has remained incommunicado since her children were taken into custody by the state government. Adetayo is to spend his sentence at the Kirikiri Prisons.

PUNCH 15/02/14

My View:

A good step in the right direction!  It is obvious that the Lagos Government is the State at the forefront of working tirelessly to Fight Sexual Abuse in Nigeria. This judgement will sound as a warning to other rapists and pedophiles out there. Never the less, there is still much to be done. I believe this punishment is not enough. Concerning sexual abuse, three factors should be taken into consideration, which I termed the “PPC rule”: PREVENTION. PUNISHMENT. CORRECTION

1.      Prevention- Effective and efficient measures must be implemented by the government to prevent Sexual Abuse in every society. Individuals must take stringent measures to protect themselves; Parents must protect their children/wards, especially in a state where every man is “On his Own” in terms of security.
2.      Punishment – For any persons found guilty of Sexual Abuse, strong and lasting punishments should be meted on such persons. When convicted, spending time in jail will enable the convict have enough time to reflect on his/her actions during the jail term.
3.      Correction- It is not enough to punish someone for a crime. It is one thing to punish; and it is another thing for such persons to truly understand why he/she is being punished. Perpetrations of sexual abuse should also be rehabilitated. They should be educated and enlightened on the dangers and effects of their actions to prevent a repeat of such act.

I’m glad he had accident after raping me – 12 year old rape victim

I’m glad he had accident after raping me

In the emergency ward of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, 21-year-old Oye Adeleke was lying on a bed like every other patient who had suffered different degrees of fracture to their limbs from accidents. But Adeleke’s case is peculiar. In fact, the story behind how he landed in the hospital had circulated around the ward. Some of those who were discussing the issue when our correspondent visited him, used the word “karma” to describe his fate.
On January 18, 2014, Adeleke, who is an apprentice meat seller at Tinubu Market in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, allegedly added his name to a long list of sexual predators walking the streets of Lagos. That day, which would change the life of 12-year-old Bisola (not real name) forever, was when Adeleke ambushed the young girl and raped her for one hour. When our correspondent visited the ailing girl at her parent’s home in Gowon Estate, Ipaja area of Lagos, she gave a sordid detail of her ordeal at the hands of Adeleke, which later landed her in the surgical ward of the Igando General Hospital. Adeleke was eventually arrested but in his attempt to escape from the police custody, he was hit by a moving vehicle when he ran across the road.
Adeleke’s boss supplies meat to Bisola’s mother, a food vendor. It was learnt that the suspect had on occasions delivered meat to the girl’s mother. Bisola, a shy girl, who looked at her toes as she spoke, said, “I followed a friend to buy sugar in the market (she sells sugar to assist her family) and when I was coming, he (Adeleke) told me to follow him to their shop to collect meat for my mother. I followed him but I did not enter the shop.
“There was nobody else around. It was after 7pm. He told me to enter but I said he should bring out the meat. He then said I should take the meat from the freezer. As I attempted to open the freezer, he grabbed me and tied a cloth over my face and mouth. He held me down and pulled off my pants. He did not leave me until around 8.30pm. I could not shout. The place was dark.” The girl paused, her eyes moist with tears as she narrated the story. “I am happy a vehicle hit him,” she said. Each word spoken by Bisola seemed to come out with tremendous pain. It was clear the girl would rather not remember the detail of the experience her young body and mind had been put through.
Bisola was raped for an hour by her estimation.  She said she remembered the time Adeleke finally released her because she had to look at the clock on the wall of the shop because she knew her mother would have been looking for her. The young girl rushed out of her captor’s embrace bleeding and bruised.  But shame and confusion would not allow her to go straight to her mother.
Her mother told Saturday PUNCH that she had expected her to return but when she did not, she retired to bed, thinking that her daughter must have stayed late in her friend’s house. “I heard her enter the house later. But around 3am, she started to sob loudly,” she said. Both mother and daughter live in a small decrepit wooden shack around Gowon Estate. When the woman went to check on her daughter, she noticed her underwear was soaked in blood which had started running down her legs.
She was about to scream but quickly changed her mind because she was afraid of alerting her husband, Bisola’s step-father, to what had happened. “But by morning, I could not hide it anymore. She told me the person responsible for it and around 5am, we went to report at the Gowon Estate Police Division, Ipaja. The man was later arrested,” the woman said. Bisola was taken to the hospital and a doctor who examined her immediately recommended surgery to repair her damaged private part. After the surgery, she was on admission for two days. The doctor’s report obtained by our correspondent indicated that she was brought to the hospital “bleeding profusely from second degree laceration in her private part and broken hymen.”
But a day after the young man was arrested, he was released by the police. Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, said she intervened in the matter when the victim’s step brother reported the incident to her. “The girl was raped on a Saturday; by Monday, the man was arrested. But by Wednesday, the family said they went to the police station and were informed by the investigating police officer that he had been released. I informed the Lagos Public Advice Centre of the development and officials of the centre contacted the police division. The IPO was forced to re-arrest the boy. I just wonder if the police have heard of the Child Rights Act.” One of the reasons for enacting the Child Rights Act in 2003 is to stem the tide of child abuse and molestation in Nigeria and reinforce the legal provision against it.
Adeleke was rearrested and locked up preparatory to his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba. But the suspect had a different idea. He decided to escape. As soon as the IPO turned her back, Adeleke ran out of the station and was about to cross the road when he was hit by a commercial bus. When asked why he decided to escape, he said, “I was just afraid. I did not know that it would become such a serious matter. I did not rape her. She is my girlfriend. We have been dating since early last year,” he said.
Bisola’s mother later refuted this claim as a concocted story because she only moved to Ipaja with her daughter in August 2013. Adeleke disputed that Bisola is just 12 years old which makes her a minor. He said Bisola had told him that she was 18 years old. But when our correspondent met the girl, there was nothing to indicate that a man could be fooled into thinking she could even be up to 15 years old.
The suspect said, “That day, I went to buy fuel and she followed me. When I returned home, I told her to leave but she would not. I told her to leave and I saw her off but she came back and started tickling me again. I then decided to do it. But when I pulled off her underwear and realized she was still a virgin, I decided to leave her but she started taunting me again. Then I did it. I did not know that she would bleed like that and that it would become a police matter.”When asked why he blindfolded and muffled the girl’s mouth with a piece of cloth, Adeleke denied doing that.
Meanwhile, Bisola’s mother and step-father have changed course on the case. When our correspondent visited them on Sunday, the step-father, who did not hide his anger, said he had no money to prosecute the suspect. “They should release him. I don’t have any money to move around to prosecute anybody. We have spent enough money already. Nobody should come and disturb me again,” he said.
Bisola’s step-father, who did not seem to be literate, was told that prosecuting Adeleke was not his job but that of the police and that he did not have to spend money. “What about moving here and there when the police call us or when we need to go to court? The man himself is poor. It is not worth it,” he said. Bisola’s mother, who seemed helpless in the face of her husband’s attitude, also concurred. “We spent money on her treatment; we have even incurred debt. We will leave the matter to God,” she said.
Child sexual abuse in Nigeria is on the rise but there seems to be no dedication on the part of the police to ensure proper prosecution.

Ogwu said it was unfortunate that the financial status of the families of victims prevents such victims from getting necessary care. “For instance, in this case, the doctor’s report indicates that the girl should be brought back for HIV screening and Hepatitis B screening, but you can be sure that is not going to happen if we leave the matter in the hands of the parents. This is why we decided to get the government involved,” she said. She had written a formal letter to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to take over the girl’s case.

Valentine's Day Message

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone.
Today we remember the great St. Valentine, who believed in love against all odds.  Endeavour to show additional love to all around you. Surprise people with gifts, merry and be happy. Back in the days when I was an undergraduate in the University, Valentine’s Day was so much fun. Some girls received gifts from two or more admirers, while some received none. For those who knew they weren’t going to get any gift, it was a good time (excuse) to live the hostel for a church service all day or go home to avoid answering questions or being mocked. Some girls were indifferent and not bothered at all, while some got depressed or were filled with envy and Jealousy for the so called “Lucky” girls. Even when a girl wanted to break up with her boyfriend, she had to manage and hold on till after Val’s day to ensure she gets gifts from him. The next day after Val’s (Feb 15) was a day for some girls to count their blessings and for some it was a day filled with gossip. It was fun back then and all part of youthful exorbitance. Every girl prayed to get one gift or the other.
But, just because some girls wanted to have something to say or get gifts to show off, many ended up being deceived and defiled. It was common back then. Girls who get raped on Valentine’s Day rarely speak out about it but end up confiding in one friend ( who ends up telling another friend, till it becomes public knowledge). Last night, I got a disturbing message from an unknown person on how a four year old girl who was raped in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. I woke up from my sleep and felt so disturbed for about an hour before I could go back to sleep. It was the first topic I discussed with my husband on this beautiful valentine morning. I’ll do everything I can to reach out and help.

To all my Ladies – “You are more than a few bottles of wine, cakes, perfume and chocolates. Don’t take yourself into the lion’s Den today just because of some cheap Valentine’s gifts”.

To all Men – “If she says “No” Don’t try to force her.  No matter the situation, you were not forced to buy those gifts so you should not  force sexual intercourse (Rape). Valentine’s Day should be filled with love and not a time for you to take advantage of anyone”.

Remember, every evil done to a fellow man has its consequences no matter how long it may take. The evil that men do, always live after them. Don’t bring down generational causes on your children just because of some fading passion and fading joy.

CHALLENGE SEXUAL ABUSE IN AFRICA. Let’s start the fight from Nigeria.
Once again, HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Man, 42, gives minor victim N10 after rape. Bags 10 years imprisonment

A Kano State High Court on Tuesday sentenced Auwal Idris of Gani village to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine for raping a minor. Justice Tani Hassan held that the sufficient evidence had been provided against the accused. Hassan ordered the convict to pay the sum of N100, 000 compensation to the victim, holding that failure would attract another two years imprisonment. The judge said that  in view of the evidences presented by witnesses the court had no option than to apply the punishment of rape against Idris. She said, “but for the pleadings of defence counsel, life sentence would have been passed on you.” Hassan, therefore, sentenced Idris to 10 years imprisonment, starting from the time he was held in prison in 2011. She added that if the accused default in paying the compensation, it would attract additional two years prison term. The state counsel, Zainab Mudi, had told the court how Idris lured the minor to a secluded spot on the Feb. 25, 2011 and forcefully had canal knowledge of her without her consent. “The victim said that Idris gave her N10 after having canal knowledge of her. Idris accosted her when she was coming back from a wedding ceremony on the said date,” Mudi told the court. The defence counsel, Hasiya Imam, had prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy because his client was a first time offender and had shown enough remorse.

Policeman to pay N10m damages for raping minor

A police corporal, Mr. Anthony Onoja, has been ordered to pay the sum of N10million as exemplary damages for the rape of a two-year old baby, Chinwendu Obi Onwudiwe. A Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Mararaba, a town on the outskirts of Abuja, gave the order in its judgment in a suit filed against Onoja and the Inspector General of Police by her mother, Mrs. Ngozi Obi Onwudiwe. Justice A. Asmau, in her judgment, held that the accused infringed on Chinwendu’s fundamental rights. Onwudiwe had approached the court through her lawyer, Barrister Esther Uzoma, the National Coordinator, Proactive Gender Initiative, an Abuja-based Non-Governmental Organisation, following the rape of her little daughter by the police corporal. She told the court that on June 15, 2013, at Mararaba, by Kabiyo Osino Pure Water, Onoja, of the Nigeria Police Force, had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor. According to her, she traced her daughter to Onoja’s room, where she saw the baby crying, with blood gushing out of her private part. “Onoja’s wife rationalized the blood gushing out of little Chinwendu’s private part as her monthly period (menstruation),” Onwudiwe said in an affidavit in support of the motion.
The incident was thereafter reported at the Mararaba Police Station, while Chinwendu was taken to the Mararaba Medical Center for treatment. Onwudiwe sued Onoja and the IGP, asking the court to declare that the rape of the minor violated sections 33 and 34 of the 1999 Constitution, and article 4 and 5 of African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights(Ratification and enforcement Act) CAP 10 LFN 1990, which guaranteed right to life and dignity. The court was also asked to declare that Onoja’s action amounted to torture, physical and psychological abuse, and violation of the baby’s right to survival and development as provided for in section 3, 4, 11 and 13 of the Childs Right’s Act (2003).
Furthermore, Onwudiwe asked the court to grant an order mandating a comprehensive health examination and treatment of Chinwendu at the expense of the respondents (Onoja and IGP). She equally asked the court to order the respondents to pay the sum of N10million as exemplary damages, and another sum of N1.5million as special damages for the expenses so far incurred by the parents of the little girl on her health since the unfortunate incident. In her judgment, Justice Asmau condemned Onoja’s actions, and granted the plaintiff’s prayer for payment of the sum of N10million as exemplary damages. Justice Asmau further ordered that the baby be given comprehensive medical treatment at the expense of the respondents. She however, declined to grant Onwudiwe’s request of the sum of N1.5million as special damages.

Careless Parents – 4 year old raped to death

The Katsina State Police Command says it has arrested two men for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl to death in Sandamu town of the state. The state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Senchi, told reporters on Monday in Katsina that the girl died few hours after the incident on Sept. 8,2013. Senchi said that the deceased was allegedly lured into the act while on an errand to a relation’s home. He said the girl had complained of headache to her parents when she returned and was directed by her mother to go to bed.
According to Senchi, the parents immediately reported the matter to the police in Sandamu when they noticed blood stain on her pant. “The girl was taken by the police to the General Hospital Daura, where she later died. On investigation by the state CID, doctors at the hospital said the deceased was raped. He said that two men had been arrested in connection with the incident. In another development, the command also confirmed the arrest of the seven men who allegedly raped and impregnated a 12-year-old girl in Malumfashi Local Government area of the state. Senchi said the suspects had allegedly confessed to have had sexual intercourse with the girl. The Deputy Commissioner of Police added that the cases would soon be charged to court. Senchi appealed to parents not to send their little children, especially girls, on errands unaccompanied.

12 year old Mayflower Ikenne student, raped by hostel Proprietor

Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Mr. Segun Odubela, has called a meeting of parents, whose wards are in a private hostel where its proprietor is presently facing interrogation over the defilement of a 12-year-old girl. In the meantime, the hostel in question is at the verge of being sealed off by the ministry as parents have been advised to relocate their wards before the building is put under lock and key.
Also, a meeting has been fixed between the commissioner and the victim’s parents in order to relocate her to another school because of stigmatisation. Confirming the development to Vanguard in a telephone conversation, Odubela said that the case would be well handled to serve as a deterrent to others, adding “We have visited the hostel and will seal it off. We are only waiting for parents of other children to relocate them so that their education will not be threatened. A meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow to map the way forward for the victim.”
It will be recalled that on the fateful day, the suspect, Mr. Akinduro, was said to have lured the victim to his bed, asking her to remove her clothes, an idea that was vehemently refused by the victim until a force was applied and out of fear, the victim ran to a relative at Ikenne to report the mater. Mr. Akinduro, 60, proprietor of a private hostel at Ita-Oyila village, Ikenne, was said to have allegedly raped the victim a student of May Flower School, Ikenne who was put in his custody and the matter was reported to the Police.

Ezekwesili leads fight against rape

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili
Former Minister of Education and Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has taken to social media, including the micro-blogging website, Twitter, to speak out against rape. The former minister, who recently reprimanded popular comedian, ‘’Basketmouth’’, for a rape joke on his Facebook page, first posted at about 9 pm,“Enough! It is time to act on this epidemic.” A few minutes later, she called on an anti-rape group on Twitter, ‘’Stand to End Rape’’, asking, “Can you take the lead in organising a meeting on rape epidemic as soon as possible? We must take on this scourge.”
She explained that it was urgent to tackle the rising trend of rape, proposing that a meeting among activists be scheduled. Soon after, she continued, “Please find all the coalition partners and, first, schedule a tweet-meet. My schedule is tight but I will do my best to realign. Priority action is to secure immediate and effective response from the Ministry of Justice, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.” She added, “We must, especially for our little daughters, act now. That is what governments do – act swiftly!” She further explained that an action-focused meeting was urgent to tackle the problem of rape.

PS: It’s good to know an influential person such as Dr Oby has been reading news papers, social media and hearing stories. I still wonder what the so called ‘Office of the first lady’ is doing about this issue?

Rape of minors worries human rights commission

The National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the rise in cases of rape involving minors across the country. The Executive Secretary of Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, who raised the alarm, urged law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigation into the incidents in order to bring the culprits to book. A statement from the Chief Press Officer in the NHRC, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, explained that the call came against the backdrop of the reported death of an eight year old girl who was allegedly raped to death by an unknown person in Ikot Ekang, Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Angwe called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to commence an immediate investigation into the incident and other related cases. The statement noted that “it was learnt that the victim was sent on an errand by her grandfather Mr. Enobong Wilson at about 6.30pm on Tuesday only for her to be raped and her corpse was found near an uncompleted building in their neigbhourhood.”Angwe also directed the Akwa Ibom State Office of the NHRC to immediately commence investigations into the matter.
However, he also urged parents and guardians to cooperate with the NHRC in the quest to prosecute perpetrators of the rape cases, noting that it had been observed that parents and guardians of rape victims always refuse to cooperate with law enforcement agents in the prosecution of the culprits.

Effects of Sexual Abuse on a Victim: SLLAPD - FINDLD - WGS

After looking through hundreds of case studies home and abroad; through the use of mnemonics I put together some sad emotions which Survivors of Sexual abuse commonly experience and summarized them to aid my memory as – SLLAPD - FINDLD - WGS.
1.      Shame & embarrassment
2.      Low self esteem
3.      Loss of Sex Interest
4.      Anger (at themselves & others, especially the opposite sex)
5.      Powerlessness and vulnerability
6.      Depression
7.      Fear
8.      Insomnia
9.      Night mares
10.  Detached feeling from people around
11.  Loss of concentration
12.  Distrust
13.  Weight loss or gain
14.  Guilt (responsibility for what happened)
15.  Suicidal thoughts

Hey there,
Look through those points again and try to imagine just one person feeling all these 15 emotions. How much good or productivity can come out of such person? If you have every abused anyone sexually - seek forgiveness from the victim and get Counselled. If you are nursing any idea to sexually abuse anyone- Kill that idea now! Sexual abuse has killed the dreams of many (ie through unwanted pregnancy or even suicide). Perpetrators of such evil act have destroyed lives, for a few minutes of ecstasy.

Join the fight against Sexual Abuse in Africa... start in your home country Nigeria.

People ask me - ''Why did you choose the topic- Sexual Abuse? ''

Because the menace of sexual abuse is fast decaying our society. Values, morals, culture and even religion which we largely depend on for guide to living our daily lives are been thrown out the window before evil is perpetuated. In Nigeria today, particularly in the South-East, even elderly women are not spared the agony of experiencing forceful carnal knowledge by men young enough to be their grand children. Those in the habit of sexually abusing minors are called paedophiles, while those engaged in the act with blood relations are accused of incest. Often times, these perpetrators are people who lack proper socialisation; people who suffer inferiority complex and people who lack self control.
Indeed, rape has been on the increase such that it has become a daily affair with wide dimensions bedevilling every sphere. Even the pulpit is not immune to the allure of rape. It has become common in religious organisations between the so called Leaders vs. members & Member vs. Member. The Lagos state Legislators recently made a case for stiffer sanctions, possibly life imprisonment for perpetrators of rape and defilement of minor in the state. The lawmakers also sought amendment of the Child Right Law 2007 to accommodate sanctions and preventive measures of the criminal acts that has apparently gone viral in Lagos State. It has been reported that some cases of defilement reported to the Ministry of Justice could not be prosecuted due to uncooperative attitude of some concerned parents. The parents often don’t pursue the case to its logical conclusion for fear of future consequence, including social stigma on the affected victim.
Many also suffer because of the lack of trust in our justice system. There are cases of children within the ages of 3-5year old being raped and the parents will rather choose to make it secret among themselves. In today’s world, Fathers shamelessly rape their daughters like the case of Aziza Kibibi (read her story from our blog), with the knowledge of the Mother who chooses to keep the secret within the family.
I put it to you that if Aziza Kibibi were a Nigerian she most likely would not get a husband due to stigmatization. She may also have been pushed to commit suicide because majority of the people here will blame and criticize here for one reason or the other. Her story was a true inspiration to many, including me and I wish my country people could take a clue from her. Often times, when a person is found guilty of rape the punishment he/she is given is usually a fine or a few years sentence in jail. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. A few years behind bars are nothing to a hardened criminal. Any adult who is bold enough to abuse a little child sexually, is already a hardened criminal (in my view), because it takes a wicked mind to carry out such act. The punishment ought to be life imprisonment to serve as deterrence or a minimum of 3 decades (30 years behind bars).
The word rape originated from the Latin verb “rapere”. It means to seize or take by force.  It was incorporated into Roman law and classified as a form of crime Vis: Crime of assault. It was initially considered a private wrong, but was made a public wrong by the Roman emperor, Constantine. However, the contemporary definition of rape differs from country to country.  Generally rape is defined as sexual contact or penetration achieved without consent, or with use of physical force, coercion, deception, threat, and or when the victim is mentally incapacitated or unpaired. The most critical issue here is consent. Sexual intercourse can only take place with the consent of both parties freely given and silence does not mean consent. Under the Nigerian Law, rape is defined as forcible unlawful sexual intercourse, without a person’s consent. Young girls are particularly vulnerable in the face of these growing criminal tendencies. They can be easily overpowered because of their physiological make-up.

I choose this topic for three reasons:
1.      The Experience of my dear friend who was close to being sexually abused, ignited a spark in my brains many years ago.
2.      Africans still do not speak out enough nor are we determined to find a solution to sexual abuse, especially in Nigeria.
3.      Because I need to prepare a safer country for my children, grand children & their descendants.

When will Parents Learn?

While kidnapping and armed robbery seem to have reduced in Edo State, Nigeria, suspected child defilers are on the increase in the state. As a matter of fact, out of 60 suspected criminals paraded recently by the state police commissioner, 16 were suspected child defilers. There was the case of a 33-year-old man, Justice Olise, who claimed because he was rejected by his female lovers, he resorted to sexually assaulting small boys. At the last count, on January 1, 2014 when nemesis caught up with Olise, he had allegedly sexually assaulted no less than five boys aged between 11 and 14.
The self- confessed child defiler told Sunday Vanguard that the young men usually come into his room to visit him before he sexually abused them. Revealing how he started sleeping with the boys, Olise narrated: “I started this kind of life when my girlfriend broke my heart. After that, I entered into another relationship with a girl. I suffered the same heart break.  Because of that, I decided to stay on my own.  So I started masturbating since I no longer had a girl friend. I was doing that before the children came and I started sleeping with them in my house. One of them is 11, one is 12 and the other one is 14. They are the children of my neighbours. I used them each time they come to greet me. I usually apply cream on their lap before sleeping with them. But on the 1st of January, the community people gathered in my house and started beating me. They took me to Eyaen Police Station before they transferred me to the State CID. I am a Christian but I don’t know what came over me, I have been doing it with the children for a year and a half now”.
According to the Police Commissioner in Edo State, “one Roland Osagie, 28 years old, who lives in Upper Mission Extension, was reported to have had unlawful carnal knowledge of an 11 year-old girl. The grandmother, who discovered that the girl had pain in her private part while bathing her, reported the case to the police.
Also, Ibrahim Akpobore, a 19-year-old boy, forcefully had canal knowledge of an 11-year-old girl at her mother’s farm in Igueleba, where she was sent by her mother to go with him and show him where cassava tubers are to be uprooted. When they got to the farm, he abandoned the job he was supposed do and had canal knowledge of the little girl. Peter Omoregbe, a 42 year-old man, had canal knowledge of his nine year-old step daughter.
The girl’s mother discovered blood stains on her daughter’s clothes while washing them and it was when she threatened her that she confessed that her step father had been sleeping with her and that he warned her not to tell anybody. In Irrua, Sunny David had unlawful sex with a 3-year-old girl. Her mother discovered that blood was coming out of her vagina when the girl woke up and could not ease herself. She eventually told the mother about the suspect and he was arrested. One Benjamin Amadin, a 60-year-old man, also defiled a 9-year-old girl here in Benin City, Edo State.
It is shocking that the number of those committing these atrocities keep increasing each passing day. These rapists and pedophiles are mostly the people we know.  I keep asking myself - When will parents learn?   WHEN?
When are we going to learn that no one else can be trusted with our children?  As much as we hope for the best and pray for these children any time they are out on their own, parents also have to implement extra measures to protect their children. Many factors have to be considered before sending your children on an errand, boot camps or vacations. When you send your children on holiday to their Uncle or Aunt’s home for a few weeks, how well do you know the neighbours in that area? How about the kids your child will be exposed to and have to play with? How positive will such errand or vacation impact on your child’s life? It’s not enough to Pray and Hope. I appeal to parents to become more vigilant because these perpetrators are all around us in the form of FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS AND ESPECIALLY FAMILY MEMBERS.
