A 30-year-old man, Seun Balogun, has been arraigned before
an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly raping a 52-year-old woman,
Bola. The police said the incident happened at the Alagbado area of Lagos
State. It was learnt that the victim was a “spiritual woman leader” in an
orthodox church.
On the day of the incident, a church member was said to
have fallen into a trance and Bola was on her way to call the pastor when she
was attacked around 11pm by Balogun. The defendant allegedly held her by the
throat and threatened to strangle her if she did not cooperate with him. He was
said to have forcefully had carnal knowledge of her that night.
Balogun was later arrested after the victim reported the
matter at the police station. He was arraigned on a count of rape which reads,
“That you, Seun Balogun, on February 11, 2014, about 11pm at the Aminkanle area
of Alagbado, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did forcefully have
sexual intercourse with one Bola, aged 52 years without her consent and thereby
committed an offence punishable under Section 258 (1) of the Criminal Law of
Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty and elected summary
trial. The magistrate, Ms S.O Solebo, admitted him to bail in the sum of
N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
