A Kano State
High Court on Tuesday sentenced Auwal Idris of Gani village to 10 years
imprisonment without an option of fine for raping a minor. Justice Tani Hassan
held that the sufficient evidence had been provided against the accused. Hassan
ordered the convict to pay the sum of N100, 000 compensation to the victim,
holding that failure would attract another two years imprisonment. The judge
said that in view of the evidences
presented by witnesses the court had no option than to apply the punishment of
rape against Idris. She said, “but for the pleadings of defence counsel, life
sentence would have been passed on you.” Hassan, therefore, sentenced Idris to
10 years imprisonment, starting from the time he was held in prison in 2011. She
added that if the accused default in paying the compensation, it would attract
additional two years prison term. The state counsel, Zainab Mudi, had told the
court how Idris lured the minor to a secluded spot on the Feb. 25, 2011 and
forcefully had canal knowledge of her without her consent. “The
victim said that Idris gave her N10 after having canal knowledge of her.
Idris accosted her when she was coming back from a wedding ceremony on the said
date,” Mudi told the court. The defence counsel, Hasiya Imam, had prayed the
court to tamper justice with mercy because his client was a first time offender
and had shown enough remorse.
Today's PUNCH
My View: He
was held in prison since 2011 and was charged yesterday (2014). Hummm… “Justice delayed, is justice denied”
